Growing
In this booklet we celebrate both our beautiful homegrown seasonal food and the incredible variety of food cultures and cooks we have in Shieldfield.
We began working with Medical Herbalist, Jill Schnabel to learn about how to use herbs to support our immunity and wellbeing through the winter months. This booklet shares all that we have learnt during three online sessions along with written and illustrated contributions from members about their own experience of using herbs for wellbeing.
On the Winter Solstice community members planted garlic and onions. On the Summer Solstice, they were harvested. This booklet shares knowledge on how to plait and dry the produce.
Shieldfield history
Artist Sara Cooper has researched the history and plant life of Shieldfield. She undertook drawing activities with residents and this booklet shows a selection of these drawings.
An excellent history of British Paints, which had its main offices and factory on Portland Road and Stoddart Street in Shieldfield.
Co-Curate is a Newcastle University initiated website which brings together online collections, museums, universities, schools and community groups to highlight stories and images from North East England and Cumbria. This is a rich section on Shieldfield.
Urban development
This guide has been developed for people who want to know more about local planning issues. It has emerged from planning workshops and other activities with local residents to make positive change in the local area.
REAL/SYMBOL is a three part podcast and zine that explores land, gentrification, displacement and community resistance in Shieldfield, produced by one of Dwellbeing's founders Alison Merritt Smith.
In 2018-19 Dwellbeing worked with five Planning Masters students to look at the rise of purpose built student accommodation development in the neighbourhood. This is a collection of their findings.
An installation and map which traces the land ownership of all twenty of Shieldfield’s blocks of student accommodation.
