Lettuce Eat & Rooting for Community Gardens Booklet Launch

  • Shieldfield Art Works 1 Clarence Street Newcastle Upon Tyne United Kingdom (map)

Monthly bring and share* lunches where we enjoy gathering around a common table and sharing favourite recipes. No need to book.

As part of this month's bring and share meal, SAW, Dwellbeing Shieldfield and For Solidarity, would love to invite you to the launch of our Rooting for Community Gardens booklet, bringing together learnings from visits to community gardens and farms in the North East, including Shieldfield Grows.

The idea of a bring-and-share lunch is that everyone is invited to bring a dish to share with the group. We’ll be getting in a few extra bits so if you don’t have a dish, please come along anyway – there will be enough to go round!

*There are limited funds available to help with the cost of ingredients, up to £5. For information about how to access this fund, please contact lydia@saw-newcastle.org before you prepare your dish.

About Rooting for Community Gardens

Rooting for Community Gardens is a collaboration between Dwellbeing Shieldifeld, For Solidarity and SAW. Between 2023 and 2025, Dwellbeing Shieldfield, For Solidarity and SAW worked together to host a series of visits to community gardens in the North East of England. The group was made up of volunteers, workers and members of local community gardening projects, as well as individuals curious about growing plants and community-run gardens.

During each trip we worked collectively to gather knowledge about the places we visited, by asking five enquiry questions using the growing of a plant as inspiration. Rooting for Community Gardens brings together these learnings alongside illustrations by NewBridge studio holder Jim Spendlove.

With thanks to Bees of Bensham, Dilston Physic Garden, Gibside Community Farm, Jesmond Community Orchard, Moss Peteral, North-East Organic Growers, Ouseburn Trust, Scotswood Garden, Shieldfield Grows, Station Masters Community Wildlife Garden, The Comfrey Project, TopSoil and Wild Roots

This event runs alongside The NewBridge Project’s current exhibition Document H.E.T., Alternative Publishing and Community Undercurrents, which focuses on alternative living, community action, and autonomous struggles.

This is part of Shieldfield Grows, a programme of activity that seeks to promote sustainable food production, fair land usage and community flourishing. Developed as a collaboration between Dwellbeing Shieldfield and Shieldfield Art Works.
